No break for pregnant women
(Excerpted from an editorial)
3/29/2008
It's a staple of good manners to help out a visibly pregnant woman whenever you can…
But when a California assemblyman tried to enshrine that little bit of good manners into law, all hell broke loose.
Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irving, authored a bill allowing women in their third trimester of pregnancy to qualify as "temporarily disabled," and thus obtain handicapped-parking placards.
Critics complained that pregnancy isn't a disability, but a natural state of life. And that's true, but so is old age, and no one objects to giving the elderly a hand.
Expectant women… …sometimes can use a little help getting around. And seeing that they're bringing the next generation into being, they deserve it.
But amid all the controversy, DeVore's bill died in committee.
